BSF Intervenes to Stop Illegal Border Construction by Bangladesh: Tensions Rise

The Border Security Force (BSF) has stepped up its vigilance and intervened to halt illegal construction activities by Bangladeshi citizens along the India-Bangladesh International Border (IB), particularly in West Bengal. This action follows the growing trend of such activities in the border areas, especially in regions near Mekhliganj, Coochbehar.

On Friday, the BSF expressed its “strong objection” to the construction of a sentry post bunker by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dahgram Angarpota, located within 150 yards of the IB. Similarly, an “illegal” house construction in Phulkadabari, Mekhliganj, was also halted after the BSF raised its objections. Last week, attempts to build two illegal houses in Jhikabari, Kuchlibari, were similarly stopped by the BGB following strong opposition from the BSF.

The BSF has maintained a heightened alert on the 932 km stretch of the 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border since August 2024, particularly after political changes in Bangladesh. Relations between the two countries have recently been strained, with both nations summoning each other’s High Commissioners over concerns related to border activities, including fence construction and border killings. Bangladesh’s interim government has also signaled its intent to revisit certain border agreements during an upcoming meeting of the BSF and BGB directors general.

The BSF continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring the security of the border while preventing illegal activities and smuggling.
