Ex-MP Deputy CM’s Son, Four Others Get Life Sentence for Family Murder Over Property Dispute

Family Feud Turns Deadly: Court Sentences Five to Life Imprisonment

Korba: In a shocking case of a family dispute escalating into a brutal crime, a court in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district has sentenced Harbhajan Singh Kanwar, son of former Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pyarelal Kanwar, along with his wife and three others, to life imprisonment for the cold-blooded murder of his younger brother, sister-in-law, and their four-year-old daughter.

A Gruesome Crime Driven by Property Dispute

The crime took place on April 21, 2021, when Harish Kanwar (40), his wife Sumitra (35), and their daughter Yashika (4) were brutally murdered in their home in Bhaisma village, under the Urga police station jurisdiction. The victims were attacked multiple times with sharp-edged weapons, with Harish’s throat viciously slashed, according to Additional Public Prosecutor Krishna Kumar Dwivedi.

The Conspiracy & Key Evidence

The District and Additional Sessions Judge (III) Sunil Kumar Nande convicted Harbhajan Singh Kanwar (52), his wife Dhankunwar (39), his brother-in-law Parmeshwar Kanwar (31), and two others, Ramprasad Mannewar (31) and Surendra Singh Kanwar, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 34 (common intention).

Prosecutors revealed that Harbhajan masterminded the murders due to a long-standing property and family dispute. Investigators uncovered a key message exchanged between Harbhajan and his brother-in-law Parmeshwar that read:

“Gate khula hai, aap log aa jaaiye” (“The gate is open, you can come in”), signaling the killers to enter.

After receiving the message, Parmeshwar and two others arrived on a motorcycle in the early hours of April 21, 2021, and carried out the brutal killings while Harbhajan, his wife, and their daughters were away on a walk.

Survivor & Arrests

Shockingly, the killers spared the life of Janki Bai, the mother of Harbhajan and Harish, who was present in the house at the time. Police later arrested Harbhajan, his wife, his brother-in-law, and the two hired killers.

Legacy of the Kanwar Family

Harbhajan’s father, Pyarelal Kanwar, served as Deputy Chief Minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh during Digvijay Singh’s government from 1993 to 1998. He passed away in 2011.

With this verdict, justice has been served, but the case stands as a grim reminder of how greed and family disputes can lead to devastating consequences.
