Budget 2025: FM Nirmala Sitharaman to Unveil Growth-Focused Plans Tomorrow

Expectations High as India Looks at Economic Growth, Tax Relief, and Infrastructure Boost

New Delhi: With the Economic Survey 2024-25 setting the stage, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to present the Union Budget 2025-26 in Parliament on Saturday, February 1. The Budget is expected to continue the government’s strategy of driving economic growth while ensuring equitable development, with a strong focus on rural welfare, infrastructure expansion, and possible tax relief for the middle class.

Rural Development and Financial Inclusion at the Forefront

The Economic Survey emphasizes improving the quality of life in rural areas, ensuring inclusive growth through better access to financial services. Initiatives such as microfinance institutions, self-help groups, and credit intermediaries are expected to play a key role in helping rural households and small businesses. Increased budget allocations for agriculture, rural housing, sanitation, clean fuel, social protection, and connectivity are also anticipated.

Major Push for Infrastructure to Drive Growth

A key highlight of the Economic Survey is the need for significant infrastructure investment over the next decade to meet India’s development goals. Capital spending on infrastructure has already grown at an average rate of 38.8% from FY20 to FY24, and this trend is expected to continue in the upcoming Budget. Increased investment in highways, railways, and urban development projects is likely, as the government aims to create more jobs and boost economic activity.

Hopes for Middle-Class Tax Relief

The middle class is hopeful for relief in the form of lower income tax rates and a higher standard deduction. Currently, under the old tax regime, the basic income exemption limit is ₹2.5 lakh, while in the new tax regime, it is ₹3 lakh. Any reduction in income tax would mean more disposable income in the hands of individuals, potentially boosting consumption and accelerating economic growth.

Support for Domestic Manufacturing Through Duty Reforms

The Budget may also bring changes to customs duties to correct the inverted duty structure in some sectors. The expected move would aim to support domestic manufacturing by increasing tariffs on finished goods while reducing duties on essential raw materials and inputs.

Shifting Focus to Domestic Growth

Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran, while presenting the Economic Survey, highlighted that India will need to rely more on domestic growth drivers as global trade and globalization trends slow down. The Budget is expected to reflect this shift, emphasizing policies that strengthen India’s internal economic framework.

Budget Session Timeline

Finance Minister Sitharaman will deliver the Budget speech in the Lok Sabha at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Budget Session of Parliament, which began on January 31, will take place in two phases. The first phase will continue until February 13, and the second phase will run from March 10 to April 4.

As the nation awaits the Budget announcement, expectations are high for policies that promote economic resilience, infrastructure development, and relief for the middle class, ensuring that India’s growth story continues despite global uncertainties.
