Suzuki Plans Entry Into Small Electric Cars in India After Launching e VITARA

Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation is preparing to enter the small electric car market in India, but only after gaining valuable experience from its first electric SUV, the e VITARA. The e VITARA is set to make its global debut in India at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
During an interaction with reporters, Toshihiro Suzuki, the company’s Representative Director and President, highlighted Suzuki’s confidence in the enduring appeal of small cars in India. He noted that as the market leader through its subsidiary Maruti Suzuki India, the company understands the country’s need for affordable cars, especially as a billion people are likely to upgrade from two-wheelers to four-wheelers in the future.
“We believe compact vehicles are ideal for EVs, but first, we need to master the manufacturing techniques for electric vehicles. After fully understanding these processes, we plan to bring small electric cars to the market,” Suzuki stated. However, he did not provide a specific timeline, emphasizing the importance of customer feedback following the launch of the e VITARA.
Maruti Suzuki will unveil the e VITARA at the Bharat Mandapam event. Additionally, Suzuki Motorcycle India will present its first electric scooter, the e Access, at the same expo. Both models will serve as global exports, with India positioned as a key production hub for Suzuki’s EV portfolio.
Suzuki also expressed the company’s commitment to strengthening its SUV lineup to regain a 50% market share in India’s passenger vehicle segment. “Capturing the top share in the SUV segment is our priority. We plan to introduce new models and focus on hybrid, CNG, and hydrogen technologies to meet customer expectations,” he added.
India’s importance as an export hub is central to Suzuki’s strategy. The automaker aims to supply high-quality vehicles to Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, and other Asian countries. The e VITARA will first be exported to Europe, followed by Japan and other markets.
Suzuki also highlighted the success of exports like the Fronx, which resumed shipments to Japan last year with a pending order of 15,000 units. In 2024, the company achieved a record export of 3.26 lakh units.
Despite the rise of SUVs, Suzuki remains optimistic about small cars. “The sales of Maruti Suzuki’s small cars are still comparable to SUVs sold by other manufacturers. Small cars won’t disappear because they cater to a significant population transitioning from two-wheelers to four-wheelers,” Suzuki explained.
When asked about the company’s relationship with Toyota, Suzuki called them both “a good partner and a strong competitor,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining healthy competition.
Suzuki’s vision for India combines innovation, affordability, and a global outlook, reaffirming its commitment to the market as it transitions into an electric future.
