Mumbai Police Sub-Inspector Booked for Allegedly Demanding Rs 3 Lakh Bribe to Release Man in Drug Case

A Mumbai police sub-inspector, Gyanesh Yedage, has been booked by the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to release a man detained in a narcotics case. Yedage, who was posted at Dongri police station, reportedly went on sick leave after he became aware of the investigation against him.

The case began when the 30-year-old complainant approached the police station in South Mumbai on October 14 to inquire about his brother, who had been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Yedage allegedly threatened the complainant, stating that his brother would be booked for possessing a commercial quantity of drugs, which would result in a long jail sentence of seven to eight years.

The officer then demanded Rs 3 lakh to prevent the charges and secure the release of the detained man. After negotiations, the bribe amount was lowered to Rs 2.7 lakh. The complainant, unwilling to comply, reported the incident to the ACB on October 16, leading to an investigation.

Although Yedage was not arrested immediately as he was not caught red-handed, the ACB confirmed that the officer had attempted to obtain illegal gratification. The accused officer’s actions are being investigated, and a case was formally registered on January 8.
