J&K Statehood Demand: CM Omar Abdullah Appeals, PM Modi Reiterates Commitment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the 2024 assembly elections, inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel on Monday, enhancing connectivity to Sonamarg. The event also saw Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urging the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir—a promise PM Modi made before the elections.
Omar Abdullah’s Appeal
Speaking at the function, CM Abdullah highlighted the Prime Minister’s earlier commitments to the region. “You spoke about bridging the ‘distance of hearts’ and the ‘distance from Delhi.’ I believe you will soon fulfil your third promise—restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, expressing hope for a swift resolution.
PM Modi’s Assurance
In response, PM Modi reassured the audience of his commitment. Without directly mentioning statehood, he stated, “This is Modi. I keep my promises. The right things will happen at the right time.” He emphasized Jammu and Kashmir’s importance as the “crown of India,” expressing a vision of prosperity and development for the region.
Infrastructure Milestone
The newly inaugurated Z-Morh tunnel will ensure year-round access to Sonamarg, a major tourist destination, even during harsh winters. This is a significant step toward improving connectivity to the Ladakh region, as the Zojila tunnel, expected to be completed by 2028, will transform the Srinagar-Leh road into an all-weather route.
This visit underscores the dual focus on development and addressing the political aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir, with promises of progress and reconciliation for the region.
