Israel-Gaza War Nearing an End? Ceasefire Draft Agreed, Hostage Release Likely

The Israel-Gaza war, which has spanned over 15 months, may finally be nearing its conclusion as Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire draft. The agreement, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, also includes the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas since their October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli territory.
Officials from both sides have indicated significant progress in negotiations, with final approval pending from Israel’s Cabinet. A potential ceasefire could provide a much-needed pause in the conflict, which has devastated Gaza, displaced millions, and sparked global unrest.
The proposed three-phase deal, based on a framework introduced by U.S. President Joe Biden and endorsed by the U.N. Security Council, outlines steps to de-escalate the violence. The first phase includes the release of 33 hostages over six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israel would also gradually withdraw from civilian areas in Gaza, allowing humanitarian aid to flow and displaced residents to begin returning home.
Details of the second and third phases remain under negotiation but are expected to include the release of remaining hostages, further Israeli withdrawal, and a long-term reconstruction plan for Gaza under international supervision.
The war has left over 46,000 Palestinians dead, including thousands of women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and displaced 90% of the population in Gaza. Israeli retaliatory strikes have continued, with both sides blaming each other for delays in previous peace efforts.
As the January 20 inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump approaches, pressure has intensified to finalize the agreement. Trump expressed optimism, saying, “A ceasefire is very close.” Mediators are hopeful that this deal could mark the beginning of the end of the deadliest conflict in the region’s history, but many challenges remain in achieving lasting peace.
