Controversy Erupts Over Maha Kumbh Mela Land in Prayagraj: Waqf Board Ownership Claimed

With just days to go before the grand Maha Kumbh Mela begins in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, a fresh controversy has emerged. Some local Muslims have claimed that the land where this iconic spiritual gathering is set to take place belongs to the Waqf board. They allege that 54 bighas of the land, including areas designated for Akhadas, are Waqf property and have stated that entry for Muslims cannot be restricted on this land.
The Maha Kumbh, a spiritual and cultural event of immense significance for Sanatan Dharma followers, is celebrated every 12 years and draws saints and pilgrims from across the globe. This year’s event, running from January 13 to February 26, is expected to host millions of devotees.
Additional Claims and Security Arrangements
In addition to the claims about the Kumbh land, some locals have also stated that the K.C. Pant Institute, which houses the Kumbh archive center, is Waqf property. These assertions have added to the ongoing debate around the ownership of key sites in Prayagraj.
Amid these claims, authorities are focused on ensuring a safe and smooth Maha Kumbh experience. Advanced security measures, including automatic number plate recognition technology, anti-drone systems, underwater cameras, and well-equipped boats, have been deployed to manage the massive crowds expected. Professional divers and water police will also be on standby to ensure safety in the river.
Preparations in Full Swing
Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar recently reviewed the security arrangements at the Kumbh site, witnessing mock drills by NDRF and SDRF teams and the women ATS commandos. Measures are being taken to extend the bathing ghats to accommodate large crowds, with arrangements for devotees to access and exit ghats seamlessly from their respective routes.
The Maha Kumbh’s main bathing rituals, known as Shahi Snan (royal baths), are scheduled for January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami). Authorities expect crores of devotees to gather in Prayagraj for this once-in-12-years spiritual celebration.
