“I’m Not Retiring, Just Taking a Sensible Pause”: Rohit Sharma on His Cricketing Future

In a candid lunch-time interview with Star Sports during Day 2 of the Sydney Test, Rohit Sharma dismissed any speculation about his retirement. The Indian skipper clarified that his recent decision to sit out of the Sydney Test was purely based on his current form and not an indication of stepping away from the game.

Rohit explained, “This is not a retirement decision, nor am I stepping aside from cricket. I’m just out of the game because my bat isn’t working right now. But there’s no guarantee it won’t work after two months or five months. Cricket is unpredictable, and so is life. I have belief in myself that things will change. At the same time, I have to be realistic.”

Acknowledging his struggles with the bat, Rohit said the decision to skip the match was tough but necessary. He emphasized that no one but him can decide his future in the sport. “Someone sitting outside with a mic, laptop, or pen can’t dictate when I should step aside. I’ve played this game for years, and these decisions are personal. Sensible aadmi hoon, mature aadmi hoon, do bachhon ka baap hoon, mere paas thoda sa dimaag hai! (I am a sensible man, a mature man, a father of two kids, so I have some brains!),” he said with a smile.

Rohit also addressed reports claiming selectors had informed him that he was not in their plans beyond the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He brushed off these speculations, reiterating that retirement is a decision he will make on his own terms. As he wrapped up the interview, he reassured fans, “Main kahin ja nahin raha. Idhar hi hoon.” (I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here.)

This heartfelt and confident response shows that while Rohit Sharma acknowledges his current struggles, he’s far from giving up and is determined to bounce back.
