Parliament Scuffle: Rahul Gandhi’s Case Transferred to Crime Branch, Political Tensions Escalate

The Delhi Police has transferred the case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to its Crime Branch following allegations of a physical altercation in Parliament that left two BJP MPs—Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput—injured. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has sparked intense political controversy.
An FIR was registered against Gandhi based on a complaint filed by the BJP. The charges include sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and common intention. A senior police officer confirmed, “The case has been moved from the local police to the Crime Branch, and statements from the injured BJP MPs will soon be recorded. Rahul Gandhi may also be called for questioning.”
Meanwhile, Congress leaders have strongly rejected the allegations. They filed a counter-complaint accusing BJP MPs of “misbehaving” with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and physically “manhandling” Rahul Gandhi. Police are currently seeking legal advice on whether a separate FIR can be registered based on the Congress’ complaint.
The investigation will involve reviewing CCTV footage from Parliament premises and gathering video evidence from media sources. If needed, police may recreate the sequence of events to clarify the details of the incident.
The controversy escalated when BJP MPs, led by Hemang Joshi and accompanied by Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, lodged their complaint at Parliament Street Police Station. Shortly after, a Congress delegation—including Digvijaya Singh, Mukul Wasnik, Rajiv Shukla, and Pramod Tiwari—visited the station to submit their counter-complaint.
In response to the growing tensions, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued strict instructions prohibiting MPs and political parties from holding demonstrations or protests at the gates of Parliament. Sources revealed, “No dharnas or demonstrations will be allowed at the Parliament House building gates moving forward.”
As both political parties remain locked in a blame game, the incident has further deepened tensions within Parliament, drawing national attention to the escalating clashes between the ruling BJP and the Congress.
