Nitin Gadkari Highlights How Road Projects Can Help Solve Delhi’s Garbage Woes

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized an innovative approach to tackling the growing garbage problem in Delhi and other metro cities by utilizing municipal waste in road construction. Speaking at the special Auto Conclave, Gadkari revealed that 80 lakh tons of Delhi’s municipal garbage have already been used to build roads, transforming waste into a valuable resource.

“Delhi has four mountains of municipal garbage. Now, we have used 80 lakh tons of this waste for road construction,” he said, highlighting several projects including the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway, Ahmedabad-Vadodara Highway, and roads in parts of Chandigarh.

Additionally, Gadkari shared updates on another important project to convert stubble, or ‘parali’, into biofuel to combat pollution, particularly the hazardous winter haze in northern India. He revealed that 400 such projects are underway, with 60 already operational, including efforts to produce bio-CNG from parali.

Gadkari also highlighted a project in Panipat where IndianOil is converting rice stalks into bio-ethanol, bio-vitamins, and even aviation fuel, calling it a prime example of “waste to wealth” generation. This, he said, not only helps reduce pollution but also decreases the nation’s reliance on fuel imports, contributing to India’s goal of becoming self-reliant.

He noted that the burning of stubble has already decreased by 40% and is expected to reach zero in the next few years, thanks to these initiatives focused on innovation, technology, and turning waste into economic value.
