Actress Dies At Mexican Spiritual Retreat After Consuming Deadly Monkey Frog Venom

Mexico City: Mexican short film actress Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez tragically passed away on December 1 after participating in a Kambo cleansing ritual at a spiritual retreat. The 30-year-old actress, known for her dedication and passion for the arts, was attending the retreat as part of a Healer Training Diploma program when the incident occurred.
Kambo rituals involve the use of venom from the Amazonian giant monkey frog, traditionally employed by indigenous communities for cleansing toxins. Despite its cultural roots, the practice is banned in some countries due to its potential risks.
Rodriguez consumed a drink known as Kombo, containing frog venom, which triggered severe reactions, including vomiting and diarrhea—common side effects of the ritual. Initially, she declined medical assistance but eventually sought help when her condition worsened.
She was rushed to a Red Cross hospital but, tragically, could not be saved. It remains unclear how much time elapsed between the onset of symptoms and her arrival at the hospital.
Marcela was identified by Mexican production company Mapache Films, which shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram: “With deep regret, we mourn the loss of our beloved colleague and friend, Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez. Her passing has left an immense void in our hearts and the professional community. Her dedication, joy, and commitment deeply touched everyone who had the privilege to work with her.”
The incident has sparked conversations about the safety and regulation of traditional healing practices, especially as they gain popularity in wellness circles. Rodriguez’s untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of such rituals when undertaken without sufficient knowledge or precautions.
