Eknath Shinde Agrees to Deputy CM Role Amid Pressure from Shiv Sena Leaders

In a significant political development in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader and caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has agreed to take on the role of Deputy Chief Minister in the upcoming government. The decision comes after persistent appeals from Shiv Sena MLAs and leaders, who emphasized the importance of his continued leadership for the party and the alliance.

The new Mahayuti 2.0 government, led by BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister, will be sworn in on Thursday at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. NCP leader Ajit Pawar will also serve as a Deputy Chief Minister alongside Shinde.

Shinde, who led the previous Mahayuti government as Chief Minister for two-and-a-half years, was initially reluctant to accept the Deputy CM post. However, repeated meetings with party leaders over the past two days at ‘Varsha,’ the CM’s official residence, helped persuade him to reconsider.

“We urged him to join the new government, as his presence will strengthen both the Shiv Sena and the alliance,” said Shiv Sena MLA Bharat Gogavale. Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the unanimous support from MLAs and MPs for Shinde’s active role in the new government.

While Shinde had initially expressed interest in focusing on his role as Shiv Sena chief and touring the state to bolster the party, he ultimately agreed to the leadership’s request. The swearing-in ceremony will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a new chapter in Maharashtra’s political landscape.

This move is expected to reinforce the Mahayuti alliance’s stability while highlighting the Shiv Sena’s crucial role in state politics.
