Ghaziabad Lawyers’ Strike Intensifies as Two More FIRs Filed, 44 Named

Tensions remain high in Ghaziabad as the police registered two additional FIRs against lawyers involved in the October 29 courtroom violence, bringing the total number of cases filed to six. These latest FIRs name 44 lawyers, while 70-80 others remain unidentified. Lawyers have condemned the FIRs, calling them an attempt to discredit their ongoing protest.

The unrest began on October 29 during a bail hearing that escalated into violence, arson, and a police lathicharge inside the courtroom. In response, the Ghaziabad Bar Association has been on strike, demanding the transfer of a judicial officer and action against the police personnel responsible for the lathicharge.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhishek Srivastava, two new FIRs were registered at the Kavi Nagar police station on Friday. One accuses a lawyer of entering a judicial officer’s chamber without permission to have documents attested, while the other alleges that a group of lawyers protested within the court premises, disrupted judicial work, and misbehaved with litigants and court staff.

The FIRs invoke sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including intentional insult to public servants, wrongful confinement, and obstruction of public functions. Lawyers, however, argue that the cases are meant to suppress their agitation.

“Our protest will continue until the judicial officer is transferred, and the police personnel who attacked lawyers are held accountable,” said Deepak Sharma, president of the Ghaziabad Bar Association.

Earlier protests included roadblocks on Hapur Road, which further fueled tensions. Despite no arrests being made yet, the situation remains volatile as lawyers vow to press on with their demands.
