Jaishankar Highlights Four Key Opportunities for India After Donald Trump’s Election Win
Following Donald Trump’s re-election as US President for a second non-consecutive term, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, identified several strategic areas where India stands to benefit. Speaking to business leaders in Sydney, Jaishankar shared insights on how this new political landscape could deepen US-India ties. Notably, this marks the first time a convicted felon has taken office as US President.
Four Key Areas of Opportunity
Jaishankar outlined four critical areas that could be advantageous for India:
- Supply Chain Realignment
The global reordering of supply chains, accelerated by the pandemic and geopolitical shifts, is likely to gain momentum after Trump’s election. Jaishankar sees this as a chance for India to capitalize on disruptions and strengthen its economic integration. “There was already a re-ordering of the supply chains taking place, and with the election results, this may accelerate. Some of it will be disruptive, but for India, it’s an opportunity,” he noted. - Talent Mobility Amidst Immigration Policies
Despite the trend toward de-globalization, Jaishankar emphasized the ongoing demand for skilled labor. He suggested that even with Trump’s stricter immigration policies, skilled Indian professionals could continue to find opportunities in the US. “The global workplace doesn’t just mean talent moving—businesses can move as well,” he stated, highlighting India’s demographic advantage. - Infrastructure Growth
India has made significant strides in infrastructure development over the last decade. Jaishankar cited impressive statistics, such as building 27-28 kilometers of highways and 12-14 kilometers of railway tracks daily. Additionally, India has added 75 new airports in the past ten years, with more in the pipeline. - Digital Revolution
India’s digital landscape has also seen remarkable growth, particularly in digital payments. With 11-12 billion monthly transactions, even small street vendors have embraced QR code payments. Jaishankar emphasized that India’s digital infrastructure positions the country as a leader in digitization.
By leveraging these opportunities, Jaishankar believes India can strengthen its strategic partnership with the US and drive economic growth in the years ahead.
