110 Indian Students Evacuated From Iran Arrive In Delhi

A group of 110 Indian students stranded in Iran amid escalating tensions with Israel landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Of the total evacuees, around 90 students are from Jammu and Kashmir.

All the students are enrolled at Urmia Medical University and were the first group to be evacuated. Their journey included transit through Armenia and Doha, with the final leg of their flight to Delhi delayed by three hours.

As hostilities between Iran and Israel intensify, Indian families have been urging the government for the safe return of their loved ones. Protests have erupted in Kashmir, a region that sends a significant number of students to Iranian universities.

An estimated 13,000 Indian students are currently studying in Iran, most of them pursuing medical degrees.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar for the swift evacuation. In a post on X, the association noted that the Indian government also arranged the Delhi-to-Srinagar leg of the journey at no cost. “We are thankful for this smooth and safe return home,” they said.

In addition to students, several Indian citizens, including pilgrims, remain stranded in Iran. The Indian Embassy in Tehran activated an emergency helpline and has urged all nationals to consider evacuation.

Background: Escalating Iran-Israel Conflict

The crisis stems from Israel’s recent launch of “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. In retaliation, Iran fired a volley of missiles and drones that struck multiple Israeli cities, leaving over 20 people dead and many injured.

Israeli fighter jets struck Tehran on Wednesday morning after issuing civilian evacuation warnings in certain areas. Later, Israel claimed it had bombed an Iranian nuclear site, while Iran launched hypersonic missiles in response.

Amid rising tensions, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected US President Donald Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender, warning of “serious, irreparable consequences” if the US intervenes. President Trump, while denying direct involvement in Israel’s campaign, warned that American patience is “wearing thin.”
